A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LUCKENBOOTH
The 'Luckenbooth' brooch gained popularity during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots in the 16th century. The name is derived from the first place the brooches were sold, namely the"locked booths" along Edinburgh's Royal Mile. They were most often made of silver and were exchanged between lovers on their betrothal. The Luckenbooth brooch would also be pinned to the christening shawl of their first born to protect them from evil spirits.
