Carroll Clan Mini-Book Excerpt

One Carroll who literally made his mark on American history was the grandly named Charles Carroll of Carrollton – as one of the signatories to the hallowed

Declaration of Independence of 1776.

The only Catholic to sign the declaration and one of the richest men in America at the time, Carroll, born in 1737 at Annapolis, Maryland, was a politician and lawyer and a delegate to the Continental Congress.

His grandfather, known as Charles Carroll the Settler, had immigrated to America from Ireland in 1659 and laid the basis of the family’s wealth and influence.

‘Carrollton’ was the name of the family manor from which Charles Carroll of Carrollton took his name.

His cousin, Daniel Carroll, born in Prince George’s County, Maryland, in 1737, was also an influential politician and is recognised as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Daniel Carroll’s brother, John, became the first Catholic Bishop in the United States.
