The Rosses take their name from the Province of Ross and in the Highlands are called Clan Andrias, or "Children of Andrew", from an early chief who is said to have been a devotee of St Andrew. Fearchar Mac an-t-sagairt, or "son of the priest", of Applecross, is traditionally claimed as their ancestor.
